Fiat 600E

This Fiat was added to the collection in 2024. Although it proudly displays Fiat badges on the front and back (even on the registration certificate), it’s secretly a SEAT.

After Fiat ended production of the 600D, the Dutch importer continued to import the 600E for several more years. These were fitted with Fiat badges at the SEAT factory in Barcelona.

Fiat 600: An Iconic Classic of Italian Simplicity and Design

The Fiat 600 is an iconic piece of automotive history and a beloved classic among car enthusiasts. Introduced in 1955 by the Italian car manufacturer Fiat, the 600 quickly became a symbol of post-war reconstruction and mobility. The car’s design was created by Dante Giacosa, one of the most influential automotive engineers of his time. With the 600, Giacosa managed to create a compact and practical car that perfectly suited the needs of 1950s Europe.

The Fiat 600 was equipped with a rear-mounted, water-cooled, four-cylinder engine with a capacity of 633 cc. This relatively small engine provided a surprisingly lively driving experience, making the 600 suitable for both city traffic and longer journeys. Thanks to its compact dimensions and a weight of just 580 kg, the car was agile and easy to handle, contributing to its popularity. Despite its small size, the 600 offered enough space for four people and their luggage, a remarkable achievement for the time.

Giacosa’s practical and smart design choices made the Fiat 600 a success not only in Italy but also in other countries. The car quickly became one of the most beloved city cars in Europe. In Spain, it was produced under license as the “SEAT 600,” and variations of the 600 also appeared in other countries. One of the most unique versions was the Fiat 600 Multipla, one of the first compact MPVs that could accommodate six people.

Today, the Fiat 600 remains a cherished classic, treasured by collectors and enthusiasts. Its simple yet effective design, combined with its historical significance, makes it a timeless symbol of freedom and optimism. The Fiat 600 is more than just a car; it is a reminder of an era when mobility became accessible to many for the first time.

The Seat 600 from Barcelona

The Sociedad Española de Automóviles de Turismo S.A., or SEAT, was established in 1950 as a joint venture between the Spanish government, six Spanish banks, and Fiat. Nearly all SEAT models produced until 1982 were built under a Fiat license.

The first SEAT 600 rolled off the production line on May 27, 1957, in the Zona Franca in Barcelona. The model was so successful that the order books were filled for four years.

In total, SEAT assembled 797,319 units of the SEAT 600. The last car rolled off the line on August 3, 1973.
